Japanese Sweet Potato Mochi Bites

These delightful Japanese Sweet Potato Mochi Bites are chewy, subtly sweet, and naturally gluten-free. Made with just a few simple ingredients, they offer a unique texture and comforting flavor perfect for a light dessert or snack.

✎
HOW TO MAKE IT

Let's cook.

01

Peel the Japanese sweet potato and cut it into 1-inch cubes. Steam the sweet potato cubes until very tender, about 15-20 minutes. You should be able to easily mash them with a fork.

02

Transfer the steamed sweet potato to a bowl and mash thoroughly until smooth. There should be no lumps.

03

Add the glutinous rice flour, granulated sugar, and milk to the mashed sweet potato. Mix well with a spatula or your hands until a soft, pliable dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a tiny bit more glutinous rice flour; if too dry, add a few drops of milk.

04

Divide the dough into 16 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a small ball, then gently flatten it into a disc about 1/2 inch thick.

05

Heat the vegetable oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Place the mochi bites in the skillet, ensuring they are not overcrowded. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side, until golden brown and slightly puffed.

06

Remove the mochi bites from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil.

07

If desired, dust the warm mochi bites with kinako before serving.

Chef's Tips

For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of cinnamon or a tiny drop of vanilla extract to the dough. Ensure the sweet potato is mashed very smoothly for the best mochi texture.

Easy Substitutions

Regular sweet potato can be used, but Japanese sweet potatoes offer a distinct sweetness and texture. For a dairy-free version, use plant-based milk. If you don't have kinako, a light dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of maple syrup can also be used.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover mochi bites in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. They are best enjoyed fresh, as they tend to firm up when chilled. Reheat briefly in a microwave or a dry skillet to soften.
