French Ham and Cheese Croque Monsieur

This classic French Croque Monsieur is a delightful grilled ham and cheese sandwich, elevated with a creamy béchamel sauce. It's perfect for a satisfying lunch or a light dinner, offering a taste of Parisian bistro fare at home.

✎
HOW TO MAKE IT

Let's cook.

01

Prepare the béchamel sauce: In a small saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly, until a smooth paste (roux) forms.

02

Gradually whisk in the warm milk until the sauce is smooth and thickened, about 3-5 minutes. Stir in the Dijon mustard, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and set aside.

03

Preheat a large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Lightly butter one side of each brioche slice with the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter.

04

Assemble the sandwiches: Spread a thin layer of béchamel sauce on the unbuttered side of two brioche slices. Top each with one slice of Gruyère, one slice of ham, and another slice of Gruyère.

05

Place the remaining two brioche slices on top, unbuttered side down. Spread a generous layer of béchamel sauce on the top of each assembled sandwich.

06

Carefully place the sandwiches into the preheated skillet, buttered side down. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side, until golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

07

Serve immediately, optionally garnished with a sprinkle of fresh parsley.

Chef's Tips

For an extra crispy exterior, you can lightly toast the brioche bread before assembling the sandwiches. Ensure your béchamel sauce is smooth; if it has lumps, pass it through a fine-mesh sieve.

Easy Substitutions

You can substitute Gruyère with Emmental or Comté cheese. For a vegetarian option, omit the ham and add sautéed mushrooms or spinach. White sandwich bread can be used instead of brioche for a less rich sandwich.

Storage & Reheating

Croque Monsieur is best enjoyed fresh. If you have leftovers, wrap them tightly and refrigerate for up to 1 day. Reheat in a toaster oven or a dry skillet over medium-low heat until warmed through and crispy.
